Abstract
This paper focuses on the current industry challenges, efforts in deploying electric vehicles (EVs), the requirements and regulations, and the risks associated with EVs in the oil and gas industry. In recent years, EVs have successfully penetrated the automotive market to replace internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, as EVs tend to have a lower carbon footprint. This results from Malaysia’s commitment to the Kyoto Protocol 2002 and Paris Agreement 2016 to reduce 45% of gross domestic product (GDP) emission intensity by 2030. These two agreements were established to combat the rising global warming due to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, making internal combustion vehicles less sustainable options. As the population of EV cars has increased progressively over the years, proper guidelines for EV usage and infrastructure have been established to serve as guidelines for EV users in line with regulations by local authorities. In support of these national goals, PETRONAS has taken proactive steps to integrate EVs into its operations. The deployment of EVs across PETRONAS facilities reflects the company’s commitment to sustainability and decarbonisation, which aligns with its net zero carbon emissions (NZCE) aspiration. As the EV population grows, PETRONAS has also adopted and aligned with key national guidelines, including those issued by the Energy Commission, BOMBA, and PLAN Malaysia, to ensure that EV infrastructure and usage meet safety, planning, and operational standards. These efforts demonstrate leadership in clean mobility within the oil and gas industry and contributed meaningfully to Malaysia’s broader energy transition agenda.
